Reviews & Scores
A perfumed nose features notes of various red berries, especially cherry, along with hints of wood, anise, violet and a hint of game. The equally sleek but markedly richer larger-scaled flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel thanks to the abundant dry extract that coats the palate and largely buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long and naturally sweet finale. This is really lovely stuff and it wouldn't surprise me if my projected range was proven to be too conservative in time. *Burghound Don't Miss!*

A magical wine in the making, Bachelet's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, bergamot, peonies and violets. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's sumptuous and enveloping, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, multidimensional and beautifully vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long and perfumed finish. Denis Bachelet has done it again. The 2019 vintage is a brilliant success at this address, and its only disadvantage is that yields were some 40% below average. As a result, Denis decided to combine all his communal Gevrey-Chambertin holdings into one cuvée, so there is no Evocelles this year. I also revisited several 2018s from bottle—I'm ashamed to say, selfishly opting to taste the cuvées I purchased for my own cellar—and was delighted to find that they have realized all the considerable potential they showed from barrel. Of course, followers of this estate will be familiar with the rudiments of the contemporary Bachelet style: old vines, destemmed berries and gentle extraction, followed by élevage in barrels, of which up to 30%—for the Charmes-Chambertin—are new and most of which derive from Tonnellerie Rémond. As I have reported in the past, Bachelet has been punching down less since the 2014 vintage, evolving in the direction of finesse and structural suppleness without sacrificing depth or incipient complexity. This is one of my favorite estates.

From vines planted between 1907 and 1917. The parcel is planted just opposite to where the Combe Grisard lets out at the limit of Griotte-Chambertin, and thus it is a site that retains great freshness even in hot years. The results in 2019 are spectacular, with a ripe red and black berry fruit aroma, and a pronounced savoury/mineral character. The wine is muscular and tense, yet retains a subtle, refined silkiness that is truly exemplary. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039.
